Barent Cruytdop. Block A, Lot 7. Before June 15, 1660. The story of Barent Cruytdop and his home on de Heere Straet is that of a man overextended from Day One. Denys Isaackzen, the carpenter who built the house, had to sue to collect his wages, with Cruytdop claiming, “all is not yet finished.” Cruytdop proceeded to borrow 900 guilders against his house from Joannes Vervelen, but failed to repay the debt. So Vervelen took Cruytdop—or rather his wife, in his absence—to court, with the result that Cruytdop’s brand-new home was sold under an execution, and the Cruytdops vanished from the record.
